| Shared note | Albert E. Gates, Jr. is the same person as "Ned", a major in the army. At age 69, married a 23 year-old in 1983 and died 3 years later. Ned Gates Jr. says his father falsified his age 2x: "...to get into the flying cadet program and the second was to rejoin the active Air Force for the Korean War. He was too old both times." -email Ned Gates, 5 Oct. 2010. Photo analysis to determine Ned's actual age: Photo #1 (no caption)- kids are (L to R): Ned, Connie (my mother, born Feb 1912), Fran (Connie's sister, born Oct 1913, 1 year and 8 mo younger than Connie) and Gussy (born Dec 1914, 1 year and 1 mo younger than Fran). Adults are (L to R): Alle (Alvina), Albert E. and Frances Lenore Gates ("Bubbles"), mother of Connie, Fran and Gussy. In photo #1: It is probably the summer, say July, since they have ice cream cones. Connie and Ned are sitting next to each other. Connie was born in Feb, 1912, and she looks about 5- dating the photo about 1917. Ned jr. was born in Sept. of 1914, 1913 or 1912. The smallest baby boy, next to Frances Lenore was born in Dec 1914 and he looks about 1 1/2 or 2. Ned clearly looks a lot more than 3 months older than the baby. If Ned Jr. was born in Sept. 1912, he would be 7 months younger than Connie, born Feb, 1912. If Ned jr. was born in Sept. 1913, he would be 1 year and 7 months younger than Connie. He would be exactly the same age as Connie's sister Fran, who was born in Oct 1913. Do you think he looks 7 months younger or 1 year and 7 months younger? Photo # 2: Captions on back: "A carload of Gates, Cleveland, O., Sept 1922 by Uncle Spud" and "Old Rio". (not sure who"Uncle Spud" was. Nel's husband, Charlie Gates, possibly). (L to R): Gussy, Frances, baby Bill (in her arms), Fran, Nel Coddington?, Ruth , Mary Jane , Connie, Ned Jr., Alle (Alvina), Albert The 1920 census lists Ned's age as 7, the 1930 census as 17. But if he were born in Sept., and the censuses are taken in June, he would be about to turn 8 in 3 months, and that would make his birth year 1912. In photo #2, dated Sept. 1922, Connie is 10 1/2 and Mary Jane is 12 (she's taller). If Ned were born in 1913, he'd be 9 years old in 1922. To me, Ned does not look like he just turned 9 that month (unless he's a tall 9 year old). He looks more like he just turned 10. That would make him born in 1912. He couldn't be born before 1912, since he is clearly younger than Connie in photo #1. So I'm guessing that he was born Sept, 1912. |
