| Shared note | "The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 34, No 41, p 2, Oct. 10, 1878. Eld. Christopher Chester died at his residence near Ashaway, in the town of Hopkinton, R. I., on Sabbath-day, Nov. 10th, 1877, in the 86th year of his age - the oldest preacher at the time connected with the Seventh-day Baptist denomination. He was the son of Christopher and Martha Chase Chester, and was born in Westerly, R. I., Feb. 24th, 1792. During the great reformation of 1806, conducted by Elders Abram Coon and Matthew Stillman, when two hundred and thirty-five additions were made to the 1st Seventh-day Baptist Church in Hopkinton, Father Chester, then a lad of fourteen years, was baptized and united with the church June 14th. In 1833 he was licensed to preach the gospel, and in the following year, March 23d, 1834, he was called to ordination. He was ordained in June, 1834, by Elders Matthew Stillman and Thomas V. Wells, of the Hopkinton Church, Eld. Henry Burdick, of Newport, and Elders Rogers and Wescott, of Waterford, Conn. At the time of his ordination, Eld. Chester lived in that part of the town of Hopkinton then known as Yawgoog, now Rockville, where there was a branch of the 1st Hopkinton Church, and where he had been for some time in the habit of conducting religious services. He continued to preach to the people in that neighborhood, "providing for honest things not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men," by following his trade of a carpenter, or occupying his spare time as a farmer or a miller, until, in 1839, he removed to the vicinity of Ashaway, where he built a house, which was his home during the remainder of his life., and in which he died. In 1847, Eld. Chester was called to the pastoral care of the 1st Seventh-day Baptist Church in Verona, Oneida Co., N. Y., and labored as a minister in connection with the first and second churches of that town between six and seven years; after which he returned to his home in Hopkinton. In 1855-6, he held a series of religious meetings at Green Hill, in South Kingstown, which continued through five or six weeks, and resulted in the conversion and baptism of some seventy-five persons, who were organized into a church. From that time until near the period of his death, he preached occasionally, as opportunity offered, married a good many couples, attended a good many funerals and labored with his hands for the support of his family. |
