| Shared note | Emigrated to Boston MA in 1634/1635, but followed Roger Williams to Rhode Island in 1637 because of religious incompatibility. He settled in Newport RI. When he returned to Lynn MA to minister to a sick Baptist from Newport, he was arrested for unauthorized preaching and jailed. His fines were paid secretly by friends. Ref. 40 (p. 92). He purchased land in Westerly RI when it was opened up in 1661. During the boundary dispute with Connecticut, he was jailed in Hartford in May 1671. Ref. 40 (p. 92). While at Newport, he served as Commissioner. While at Westerly, he served as Deputy to the General Assembly, and in 1670 as Conservator of the Peace. Ref. 40 (p. 92). He was first minister of the gospel in Westerly, being an SDB minister. Ref. 40 (p. 92). He moved back to Newport during King Phillip's War and died there in 1676. Ref. 25, 40. |
