Came to Boston with John Winthrop and 900 emigrants in 1630. Ref. 3 (p. 258). Among 1st paid military offiers in colonies, being employed by Sir Henry Vane, then in power in Massachusetts Bay. (There was a religious & political struggle between Vane and John Winthrop, first Governor of the colony.) In the 1637 fight against the Pequot Indians in Saybrook CT, he was successful. Nonetheless he was banned from MA upon his return. He returned to England, where he published a book "News of America". Ref. 3 (p. 259). He returned to America and was appointed Governor of New Hampshire. Thereafter, he returned to MA, confessed his sins of immorality and was allowed to stay. Ref. 3 (p. 259-60). He moved to Stamford CT in Apr 1640. After the Dutch massacred Indian women and children in Feb 1643, he was led Dutch troops against Indians in 1643-44. Ref. 3 (p. 260-61). Following the Cromwellian takeover in England in 1647, he began to support the Parliamentary position. On 20 May 1653, he gave an address charging Peter Stuyvesant with imposing unlawful taxes in New Amsterdam. For this he was told to leave the Dutch colony. He then moved to Providence RI, and led the English troops in a successful campaign to drive the Dutch from western Connecticut. Ref. 3 (p. 262-63). Fought Indians in New England (1640s, 1653), New Amsterdam (1649), and Long Island (1657). Settled in Southold LI in 1657-58 on a grant of land from the Matinecock Indians. Sold his home in 1659 after his wife Helena died that year; moved to Oysterbay LI (place was named Kenelworth, but later came to be known as Killingworth); joined Quakers. Was one of English signers of peace treaty between English and Dutch colonies of Feb 1663. Ref. 3 (p. 263). Portrait in possession of Richard Wood, Orrtanna PA. Voyages to England 1634-35 & 1638.
