One servant. occup?1932Died, buried 87 yrsLouisville, Jefferson, KYEVALUATIONFrom original faded notes: came to USA at age 16. His name was "Goetz" when he came over, which is pronounced in German "Gates."Oral history from Nana says John CM was from Nuremberg, Germany.Unsure if John Charles Marcus Goetz was born in Nuremburg- His father, "John," actually his name was Karl, was from Nuremberg.Census says birthplace: "Bavaria". [Bavaria included Nuremberg and Munich. Hesse included Frankfurt, Darmstadt and Kassale]. Capitol of Alsace (German) is Strasbourg. 16th c, known for beer. Capital of Lorraine (French) is Nancy.18th c. known for quiche lorraine. He lived in Hartwell, OH , ("Old Cardone" was in Hartwell, OH, according to oral interview), resided in Cincinnati, OH and then after children married, moved back to Louisville, KYOld notes say he was an accountant for the NY Central RR but I think that Nana or I got that mixed up with Grandpa Myers who was an accountant for the RR. JCMGates was a distributor of liquor. Traveled a lot.JCMGates was alive in 1929 [he wrote a letter to Connie for her HS graduation].If he died in 1932, he was 87.He is buried in Louisville, KY.Gerta and Horst Schlatter in Germany: Gerta was the daughter of cousin of John Charles Marcus Gates. At first I wrote down (from oral interview 1974) that Gerta's mother was cousin of Elizabeth Lasalle but because Eliz LaSalle was supposed to be "French", Nana corrected the story. Gerta was the daughter of a cousin of JCMGates. She did say that she and gramp and Aunt Pat visited Gerta and her two children. Need to find and contact Gerta.
