Notes

Shared Note
Served in the British Army during the Revolutionary War. He ran the first British gunboat through Long Island Sound to New York. After a freak lightning strike out of a single cloud, which ignited the ship's magazine and blew up the vessel, William decided he was on the wrong side and deserted the British. Ref. 40 ‎(p. 100)‎.
He served several monthly tours as a private in the New Jersey militia, acting as a guide and guardian of the coastline. He participated in the Battle of Somerset Court House, being wounded by a musket ball in the chest. On his way to serve General George Washington in Pennsylvania, he was captured by the British near Monmouth Court House and was detained as a prisoner of war for 22 months. Ref. 40 ‎(p. 100-01)‎.
He moved to Washington county PA about 1790, and then moved to Harrison county WVA, where other members of his family had previously settled. Ref. 40 ‎(p. 101)‎.
He owned all of the bottom land east of Salem WVA, which gave him his nickname "Bottom Billy".
He was sheriff of Harrison county WVA for a time. Ref. 40 ‎(p. 101)‎.
Ref.: 25, 40.
